Ouessant Sheep

Ouessant Sheep are believed to be the smallest naturally occurring sheep in the World

Ouessant Sheep  are a primitive heritage breed of sheep originating from the Island of Ouessant which is situated off the coast of Brittany.  The breed existed exclusively on its home Island until the beginning of the 20th century being used by the inhabitants of the Island for food and wool.

Ouessant are naturally short tailed and carry a primitive fleece with a dense undercoat and a longer courser outer coat.  Average micron is 25-28 and it is ideal for felting, spinning and other wool crafts.  Ideally suited to the weather swept Island of its origin.

The rams should stand no higher than 49 cm and the ewes 46cm so one of the smallest naturally occurring sheep.  The ewes are polled (no horns)

Ouessant should be a solid black, brown (sometimes referred to as caramel) or white.  Black is regarded as the heritage colour.

The Breed usually have only one lamb which can be born weighing less than a kg.
